classic

  • Swedish is what most people think of when they hear “massage”. The client undresses to their comfort level, and the practitioner uses oil to create glide over the skin.

Strokes are typically long, layered, and on the lighter side, in terms of pressure. Other classic Swedish techniques are petrissage (kneading) and friction.

Swedish massage usually includes the whole body and doesn’t spend too much time going deeper on any particular area.

The focus is deep relaxation and overall wellbeing, versus focusing on a specific ailment or body area.

  • Another classic, well known massage modality is deep tissue, in which deeper pressure is applied to the muscles & fascia.

The strokes tend to be shorter, more focused, and deeper, in order to penetrate further down into the tissues.

The practitioner tends to use more of their fingers, knuckles, and forearms to create more pressure, versus the more open-palm strokes of Swedish.

There might also be time spent focusing on particular areas of tension, to attempt to “dig it out”.

subtle

  • Polarity is a type of gentle energy work that uses the positive & negative ion charges in our world - and within our bodies - to create healing electrical connections.

It also employs cross-body connections, which activates brain & nervous system healing, in addition to deep relaxation.

Although not formally certified in reiki (yet!), a type of reiki is used in polarity - and Leigh-Ann will sometimes utilize other types of hands-off-the-body energy healing, depending on the client’s needs.

  • Craniosacral therapy is a very subtle - but powerful - form of body work in which the practitioner seeks to restore natural movement among the cranial (skull) bones.

In a healthy skull, the various cranial bones move slightly, along their joints.

When this movement is restricted, fluid can build up in the sinuses - even impacting the cerebrospinal fluid of the brain!

Craniosacral therapy employs an incredibly light touch to encourage the bones to move to their optimal range - and therefore fluid to resume optimal drainage throughout the sinuses.

specialty

  • Thai massage is a unique modality, practiced clothed and on a padded mat on the floor.

The practitioner moves & manipulates the recipient’s body with stretching, compression, and joint rotation.

It also works with the sen, or energy, lines of the body and many other Ayurvedic concepts, to cultivate overall balance and wellbeing.

  • Cupping is a modality from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It was developed thousands of years ago and works with the body’s fascial, lymphatic, and circulatory systems.

Glass (or silicone) cups are placed on the body with suction, which draws stagnant blood & metabolic waste from the muscles.

It also lifts and separates the tissues (both muscles and fascia, or connective tissue), meaning it can be used not for general detoxification, but also for massage.

Cupping can be incredibly powerful in the treatment of chronic pain, healing of injuries & scar tissue, and overall hydration of the tissues.

Due to it’s detoxification & hydration capabilities, it can also improve the appearance of cellulite and increase lymph flow.

  • Reflexology is an ancient technique, using energy meridians to benefit the body’s organs, glands, and systems.

With pressure to particular spots on the feet, palms, and ears, the practitioner tries to restore balance and wellbeing to all of the body’s systems, giving them a tune-up.

Leigh-Ann practices Integrative Reflexology, a specialized program developed by Claire Marie Miller.
